FinRA
The International Reading Association chartered the Finnish Reading Association as a national affiliate in 1971.
For five decades FinRA has played an important role for teachers who have benefited from the quarterly journal Kielikukko, the publications and instructional material, and the professional development conferences.
The ABC-rooster is an old Finnish symbol for learning to read. The rooster is the logo of FinRA and it has given the name both to the Rooster Award and the journal, Kielikukko.
In September FinRA celebrates the International Literacy Day by presenting The Rooster Award to a person or a group of persons for highly regarded work for literacy. The first Rooster Award was presented in 1981.
For 30 years the International Reading Association’s International Development in Europe Committee (IDEC) has brought together representatives of the national reading associations in Europe, which are affiliated to the International Reading Association.
FinRA has played an important role in the work of IDEC.
Since 2008 FinRA is an active member association of the Federation of European Literacy Associations (FELA).
